Present MoU's


Country-wise list of universities/institutes with the MoU signing dates and their purpose is listed below.

AUSTRALIA

Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane

Signed on 15th March 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

Purpose:

  1. Development of joint venture projects between QUT and IISc
  2. Joint supervision of Doctoral Students
  3. Organisation of joint academic and scientific activities, such as courses, conferences, seminars, symposia or lectures.
  4. Exchange of staff and or students.
  5. Exchange of materials and publications of common interest.

Collaborative projects ensuing from this agreement may include any of the academic disciplines represented at QUT and IISc.


Deakin University

Signed on 23rd February 2012 for a duration of 3 years and renewable for another 3 years.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular Materials, Automotive, Product Design, Electrical, ICT , Microbiology & Cell Biology. Extension to other areas may be made through further amendments to the present Memorandum of Understanding.


University of Queensland, Brisbane

Signed on 19th January 2012 for duration of 5 years and renewable for another 5 years

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for joint research programmes, student and faculty exchange.

CANADA

University of Alberta

Signed on 23rd June, 2014, effective for a period of five years. This agreement may be renewed by mutual consent of the Parties.  

PURPOSE: Indian Institute of Science and the Governors of the University of Alberta agree to enter into a joint agreement to provide a framework for cooperative activity which may include joint research projects, education of PhD students, and joint seminars, workshops and conferences and other activity that will promote research and academic ties between our two institutions.


Carleton University, Ottawa

Signed on 15th February 2012 for a duration of 3 years and renewable for another 5 years.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions, to promote collaboration through a broad range of strategies, which would  include the design and implementation of graduate student exchange programs; Exchanges of faculty and other research and technical specialists for short-term and, as funding and other circumstances permit, longer-term visits; and The design of collaborative research projects, including the development of formal proposals for funding of such research as part of the Canada-India Centre of  Excellence which Carleton University is leading.

DENMARK

Technical University of Denmark

Signed on 29th May 2013, Renewed on 9th July 2015 with the validity till December 2019.

Purpose:

  1. Joint research activities, Scientists must work in the field of Biotechnology.
  2. Exchange of 2 students (undergraduate/graduate) each academic year
  3. Exchange of information including exchange of library materials and research publications.
  4. Exchange of Senior Scientists, Internship opportunities for bachelor students.
  5. Visits by exchange of graduate and Undergraduate students for study and other scientists for research.  

EGYPT

Egyptian Petroleum Research Institute (EPRI), Cairo

This MoU entered into effect from 26th September 2014 and remain in force for three (3) years. Effective period may be extended for further period of one (1) year, if either party notifies, in written statement. Purpose: The scope of cooperative activities between IISc and EPRI shall primarily consist of the Exchange professionals to support interactions, Collaborate in the areas of industrial and petroleum chemistry, Maintain regular communication among the research groups including major new initiatives, Exchange information on science and technology as well as experts and Hold joint seminars and other events

ETHIOPIA

Adama Science and Technology University ASTU

Signed on 18th December, 2014 with a duration of Five (5) years and renewable for another three (3) years.

Purpose: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular

  1. Joint research projects in fields of mutual interests
  2. Exchange of academic publications and reports
  3. Organization of joint symposia, workshops, lecture and conferences
  4. Exchange of faculty and students

FRANCE

Creation of International Associated Laboratory Indo-French Collaboration in Theoretical High Energy Physics (LIA IFTHEP):

Signed on 4th May 2016, Effective on 1st January 2016 for a term of four (4) years.

Purpose: To cooperate in the framework of the scientific programs involved in various areas of Theoretical High Energy Physics.


Thales Group

Signed on 30th October, 2015 with the validity of upto Five years.

Purpose: Joint PhD supervision: Thales will provide the grants to the supervisor of IISc and French university/CNRS. The Student will be evaluated for the research progress as per IISc norms. The student will have a Supervisor at IISc and Co-supervisor at a Body in France based on mutual discussion/agreement between Supervisor. The THALES funded thesis will consist in a five year thesis defended at IISC in front of a commission composed of French and Indian experts so that the Ph.D. thesis may be regarded both as a French and as an Indian doctoral thesis. Student will spend 2 years in India, 1 year in France and 1.5 years in India until submission of PhD. Student will have an option to come back to France after submission of final Thesis.


CNRS

Signed on 30th October, 2015 and valid upto Five years.

Purpose: The main purpose of the cooperation is to foster collaboration, provide opportunity for global experience, and facilitate advancement of knowledge on the basis of reciprocity, best effort, mutual benefit, and frequent interactions the Parties in the fields of teaching and research

  1. To Promote Institutional exchanges by inviting faculty and staff of the partner institution to participate in a variety of teaching and/or research activities and professional development.

  2. Exchange Information pertaining to developments in teaching, student development and research at each institution.

  3. Co-operative in Joint research programs in areas of mutual interest.

  4. Receive selected graduate and undergraduate students of the partner institution for a period of study, project work of research.



The Groupe Des Ecoles Des Mines (GEM) and Institut Telecom (Inst. Tel.)

Signed on 18th January 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

Purpose: The main purpose of the cooperation is to foster academic and scientific collaboration, provide opportunity for global experience, and facilitate advancement of knowledge on the basis of reciprocity, best effort, mutual benefit, and frequent interactions between IISc, GEM and Institut Telecom in the fields of education and research.

GERMANY

Clausthal University of Technology

Signed on 13th December 2016, shall have a duration of Five years and is renewable  for another Three years

Purpose: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular

  1. Joint research projects in fields of mutual interests
  2. Exchange of academic publications and reports
  3. Organization of joint symposia, workshops, lecture and conferences
  4. Exchange of faculty and students

Extension to other areas shall be made through mutual discussions by way of further written amendments to this Memorandum of Understanding.


University of Regensburg, Regensburg

Signed on 22nd February, 2016, valid upto five years and renewable for another three years.

Purpose: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular

Signed on 27th November, 2014 with a  duration  of   three  years and renewable for another  three years.

Signed on 27th April 2012 for a duration of 5 years

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for joint research programmes, joint supervision of research work, student and faculty exchange.

ICELAND

University of Iceland

Signed on 1st October 2012 for the duration of 3 years and may be renewed for another 3years for a further term by Memorandum of Understanding.

Purpose: University of Iceland and IISc will encourage Collaboration in research areas of mutual interest.

University of Dublin, Trinity College Dublin

Signed on 26th March 2012 for duration of 3 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for joint research programmes, student, faculty and cultural exchange.

Extension to other areas will be made through further amendments to the present Memorandum of Understanding.

ITALY

Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna

Signed 17th September, 2014, valid for a period of five years starting from that date.

Purpose: Co-operation between the two Universities may include the conduct of research projects of mutual interest; exchange visits of faculty members and researchers in order to carry out research and consultations and to encourage the training of scientific personnel; the organization of joint seminars, symposia and discussions on topics of common interest and the exchange of students of all cycles, including doctoral.


Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa

Signed on 5th January 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be extended on mutual interest.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular to Mathematics. Extension to other areas will be made through further amendments to the present Memorandum of Understanding.

JAPAN

Tohoku University

MoU EXTENSION with Tohoku University: This MOU shall enter into effect from 1st December, 2014 and extended for five (5) additional years. This action will extend the validity of the said Memorandum until December 17, 2018.


Institute for Molecular Science (IMS)

Signed on 7th October, 2015 with the validity of Four years.

Purpose: Cooperation research projects to be carried out in selected fields that are mutually agreed upon Exchange of faculty members, research personnel and students for lectures, visits and sharing of experiences. Exchanges of scientists for participating in conferences, symposia and seminars.


Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology JAIST  

Signed on 13th January, 2015 with a  duration  of  Five years and renewable for another  Three (3) years.

Purpose: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular

  1. Joint research projects in fields of mutual interests
  2. Exchange of academic publications and reports
  3. Organization of joint symposia, workshops, lecture and conferences
  4. Exchange of faculty and students

Extension to other areas will be made through further amendments to the present Memorandum of Understanding


MoU EXTENSION with Tohoku University

This MOU shall enter into effect from 1st December, 2014 and extended for five (5) additional years. This action will extend the validity of the said Memorandum until December 17, 2018.


Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University

Signed on 19th December, 2013. This Memorandum of Understanding shall have duration of Five years and is renewable for another Five years, unless either party gives notice of termination not later than 12 months prior to the expiration of the existing Memorandum of Understanding.

PURPOSE: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular, Earth Sciences.

  5. Funding and Finance


Extension to other areas will be made through further amendments to the present Memorandum of Understanding.


Shimane University

Signed on, 5th November 2013. May be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement and will become effective upon the date of signature and will remain in effect for three years

Purpose:

  1. Both Universities shall cooperate in the spirit of mutual understanding to establish close friendly relations.
  2. Both universities shall promote educational and academic cultural exchange in a wide array of areas, such as: the exchange of students and faculty; the exchange of scientific information; joint research.
  3. The details necessary to promote these exchanges will be worked out separately.

RIKEN, JNCASR IISC

Signed on, 16th September 2013.

Purpose:

  1. Exchange of educational and Research Staff.
  2. Exchange of students under the joint graduate school program.
  3. Joint research workshop.
  4. Joint research activities through the establishment of RIKEN-JNCASR-IISc joint Research Centre.
  5. Establishment of a RIKEN- JNCASR- IISc Students Award.
  6. Other forms of cooperation determined by mutual agreement.

KOREA

University of Ulsan, Republic of Korea

Signed on 8th July, 2016 with the validity of Five years and renewable for another three years.

Purpose: Co-operation between the Parties may be established within any field related to Science and Technology of mutual interest. The scope of this MoU between the Parties shall include, but not be limited to, the following areas:

  1. Joint research projects in fields of mutual interests;
  2. Exchange of academic publications and reports;
  3. Organization of joint symposia, workshops, lectures and conferences;
  4. Exchange of faculty and students.

Any addition and/or deletions to the abovementioned areas shall be made through amendments to this Memorandum of Understanding as may be mutually agreed to by both the Parties, in writing.


The Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), The Republic of Korea

Signed on 1st May 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for joint research programmes, joint supervision of research work, student and faculty exchange.

In particular, the fields of cooperation may cover the following areas and units are:

At DGIST :

Department of Brain Science, Robotics Engineering, Information and Communication Engineering, Energy Systems, Emerging Materials, Research Groups in IT Convergence, Robotics Research, Nano & Bio   technology, and Green Energy Research

NEW ZEALAND

The University of Auckland, Auckland

Signed on 30th July 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement

Purpose: UoA and IISc will encourage the following activities:

  2. Exchange of professors and research staff
  3. Exchange of students
  4. Joint research and meetings for research

SPAIN

Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona

Signed on 19th January 2012 for a duration of 5 years and renewable for another 1 year.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for faculty exchange.


Universidad Autónoma De Madrid

Signed on 16th January 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be extended on mutual interest.

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular for joint research programmes, student and faculty exchange.


SWEDEN

VOLVO Group
Signed on December 12, 2016 with the validity period of five years.
Purpose: This MoU involves the mutual cooperation and collaboration for Technologists working in different areas like, products and services but not limited to electric power generation, gas turbines (including aero-derivatives), steam turbines and wind turbines, aviation propulsion, including gas turbine engines, and oil and gas extraction and processing, power and water, healthcare and other areas of work which Institute is involved or may get involved in future which shall be described in a separate Statement Of Work (SOW), appended to each agreement.

SWITZERLAND

University of Zurich

Signed on 11th March, 2015, valid for Three years and renewed automatically for another three years.

Purpose: To encourage visits by faculty for the purpose of engaging in research and educational activities, support the exchange of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, foster the exchange of academic publications and scholarly information and develop joint research

TAIWAN

National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu

Signed on 1st December, 2014, shall remain in force for a period of five (5) years. This agreement may be amended by the exchange of letters between the two institutions. Such amendments, once approved by both institutions, will become part of this agreement. All participating students will be responsible for meeting the costs of the following:

  1. Travel, accommodation and meal expenses
  2. Medical insurance and any other uninsured medical expenses
  3. Textbooks, clothing and personal expenses
  4. Passport and visa costs

National Central University (NCU), Jhongli

Signed on July 12th 2012 for duration of 5 years and may be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement.

Purpose: NCU and IISc shall initiate cooperation in research and education with a view to contributing to the advancement of science and technology

  1. exchange of information on science and technology;
  2. exchange of undergraduate and graduate students;
  3. faculty exchange;
  4. organization of joint seminars, symposia, workshops or conferences; joint research projects

THE NETHERLANDS

Technical University of Delft

Signed on 26th November, 2015 and valid upto Five years.

Purpose: Joint PhD supervision

  1. Two PhD students will be funded by TUD and employed at TUD (a four year programme)
  2. Two PhD candidates are funded /Supported by IISc in Bangalore (approximately four years programme, and as governed by the institute)
  3. Each PhD candidate is co-supervised/co-promoted by Professors of both IISc  and TUD

University of Amsterdam

Signed on 25th March, 2015 with the validity of Three Years and renewable after that.

Purpose and Themes: Joint research projects in fields of mutual interests in the broad area of urban Complexity including smart mobility, smart cities, emergency preparedness and response, socio-economic dynamics of informal settlements etc. That involves areas of science like complexity science, numerical simulation, modelling and optimization, visualization etc.  Facilitating the admission of qualified students for one University to the other for purpose of enrolling in undergraduate and graduate programmes in the case of advanced graduate students participating in research. Exchange of academic publications and reports, Organization of joint symposia, workshops, lecture and conferences, Exchange of Scientists/faculty and students,  Exploring possibilities for developing joint PhD and MSc programmes.


The University of Groningen

Signed on, 29th November 2013. May be renewed for a further term by mutual agreement and will become effective upon the date of signature and will remain in effect for three years

Purpose and themes:

  2. Remediation/Restoration of polluted environments;
  3. Soil health and food security;
  4. Bilateral exchange of research scientists and the appointment of Joint Staff and Studentships, Development of collaborative research programmes

University of Birmingham: Renewal
Signed on 9th February, 2015, shall be effective for an initial period of three years and may be extended for a further period of three years or for any other period of time as deemed appropriate by both parties.

Purpose:
1. That co-operation between the parties may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular in the field of biosciences
2. Encouragement of future collaboration in research areas of mutual interest
3. Assessment of the opportunity for the mutual exchange of doctoral research students and research staff
4. The sharing of information about on-going research activities in order to  establish contacts and collaboration between research staff working within the same field
5. Assessment of opportunities to jointly seek funding for activities under the broad framework of this MOU from various sources


The Natural environments Research Council (NERC) Centre for Ecology & Hydrology

Signed on 1st October, 2014, effective for 5 (five) years and extendable.

Purpose: This cooperation will be based on the Identifying opportunities for bilateral exchange of research scientists; Identifying opportunities for the appointment of joint staff and studentships; Identifying opportunities for the development of collaborative research programmes.


The Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford

Signed on 2nd January 2012  

Purpose: To establish cooperation between the two institutions for the exploration of possible collaboration on academic programmes, research partnerships through innovation, entrepreneurship and training in various fields of common interests in Science and Engineering with a specific focus on health care, incorporating the modalities for collaboration on these and other areas of mutual interest between IISc and Oxford.

USA

University of Southern California

Signed on December 10, 2016 with the validity period of 5 years and renewable for another 5 years upon mutual written agreement of the parties in writing not later than three months prior to the expiration of the existing MoU.

Purpose: This MoU aims at the Co-operation within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest, particularly, in the  areas of interest to the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC and the Divisions of Biological Sciences, Electrical Sciences, Mechanical Sciences and Interdisciplinary Research at IISc.


Agreement with Larvol innovation global solutions: Women in Science Scholarship

Signed on 23rd February, 2015, valid for upto Five years.

Purpose: Larvol is an US based Company in the Pharmaceutical and healthcare industries agreed to provide three one-time Scholarship to women PhD student at IISc.


University of Florida: Cooperative Agreement

Signed on 3rd  June 2010 and Renewed on 28th June 2015 for Five years.

Purpose: To promote exchange between the faculty and students of the two institutions as well as the exchange of academic and research information.


Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering, Seattle, Washington

Signed on 3rd February, 2015, having a duration of two years and renewable for another two years.

Purpose: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest and in particular

  1. Neural Engineering
  2. Computational Neuroscience
  3. Systems Neuroscience
  4. Neuroethics

Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachussetts

Signed on 9th December, 2013. This Memorandum of Understanding shall have duration of three years and is renewable for another three years, unless either party gives notice of termination not later than six months prior to the expiration of the existing Memorandum of Understanding. PURPOSE: Co-operation between the two institutions may be established within any field related to science and technology of mutual interest.

PURPOSE: cooperation between UT Arlington, U.T.A.-MAE, SARCI and LHSR-AE-CE-II

  1. To promote interest in the teaching and research activities of the respective institutions.
  2. To deepen the understanding of the economic, cultural and social issues environment of the respective institutions.
  3. promote institutional exchanges by inviting faculty and staff of the partner institutions to participate in a variety of teaching and/or research activities and professional development.
  4. receive undergraduate and graduate students of the partner institution for periods of study and/or research.
  5. organize symposia, conferences, short courses and meetings on research issues.
